Pelvic Joint Pain

Pelvic joint pain can be caused by one, or more, of the three joints included in the pelvis. These joints are the two sacroiliac joints and the symphysis pubis joint. All three pelvic joints must move together, no one joint can move without the other two joints also moving. Pregnancy can be the most common cause of pain in the pelvic joints. Pelvic pain from the joints can also cause pain which travels into the buttocks, groin, or hips. There are several things that can be done to alleviate this pain, depending on your medical condition, the cause of the pain, and your lifestyle.

Pelvic joint pain may be helped with certain activities and exercises, which are intended to strengthen the muscles and ligaments around the joints. Try pelvic rocking using a gentle motion to strengthen the area and relieve discomfort. Another exercise that may help is to sit back onto the heels of your feet, with your feet together but your knees spread apart. Lying on your side and tucking your knees up to your chest may also help strengthen and stretch the area and help you become more comfortable. Any exercise which helps to strengthen the abdominal muscles and stretch the area will help prevent and minimize pain in your pelvic joints.

Pelvic joint pain can be treated using the common methods for all joint pain as long as it is not severe or lasts longer than a few weeks. Taking over the counter medications may help relieve pain, and sometimes your doctor may prescribe a stronger pain killer or an anti-inflammatory medication as well. Ice usually will not help on this joint pain, due to the location of the joints. You can try soaking in warm or hot water though, and this can help relieve pain for some individuals. If the pain becomes worse or lasts longer than a couple weeks then you should consult your doctor for medical advice. Joint pain does not have to be suffered silently, because there are treatments and cures that can make the pain a thing of the past.
